Career Placement

Career Placement
The Department actively and successfully assists its graduate students in career placement. Placement activities are directed by the Departmental Placement Officer. Placement is a well-organized activity among hiring institutions and those seeking employment. Information is exchanged and interviews are arranged at MIT and at the annual American Economic Association meetings.

The market for new Ph.D.s in economics from MIT remains strong. Over the last ten years, more than 60% of our Ph.D.s have gone into academic positions. The remainder have taken jobs in government, international agencies, and private firms.

The placement pattern for the 42 students graduating in 2006 and 2007 was as follows: 26 (62%) took jobs in universities or colleges, 4 (9%) in government agencies, 9 (22%) in private businesses, and 3 (7%) in international organizations. Of the 26 students that placed in academic positions, 9 were placed in universities with top-ten economics departments or business schools.

The average academic year (non-business school) salary offered for a teaching position was $103,000. The average business school salary offer was $135,000. The average salary offered for a 12-month position in a research institute/international organization was $97,000. The average 12-month salary for government positions was $93,000, and for business positions was $128,000.
