International Students

The Department welcomes international graduate students. They typically constitute a significant portion of the student body. Some MIT fellowships are available to entering international students, though the number is limited and the competition is intense. General information on scholarships, grants, and travel can be obtained from the Institute of International Education, 809 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY, 10017, or from the Cultural Affairs Officer of the United States Information Service Office nearest the student’s place of residence. International applicants are required to submit evidence of their ability to carry on studies in English.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students who have completed a three or four year bachelors degree (or equivalent) in English may request a waiver from the Department of Economics. The TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service, Rosedale Road, Princeton, NJ, 08541. Registration material and information about the test may be obtained by writing to the above address or online at www.ets.org/TOEFL/.
