Cambridge-MIT Exchange
CME Economics Exchange: Junior Year Abroad at Cambridge University
The Economics Department is participating in the Cambridge-MIT Exchange (CME)
program which, among other projects, sponsors an exchange program for students
in their junior year. This is a great opportunity for economics majors who would like
to broaden their undergraduate experience.
Deadline
Applications for the CME program for 2008-2009 will be due on Tuesday, January 15, 2008.
Planning Your Sophomore Year at MIT Is Critical.
Freshmen and sophomores planning to apply for the CME program through
the Economics Department will have to plan their schedules carefully.
In particular, students must have completed 14.01,
14.02, 14.05, and 14.30 by the end of their sophomore year to apply for the
program. We also recommend that students complete 14.04 before going to Cambridge. Doing so will give students
much more latitude in scheduling when they arrive in Cambridge, and
will, we believe, make their year there more fruitful and productive.
Transfer Credit
Students will typically take four year-long
"papers" at Cambridge and receive the equivalent of two 12-unit MIT
courses for each. The papers chosen will depend on the MIT courses the
student has already completed. Students who have not completed 14.04 and 14.32 at MIT will take mostly Part IIA papers at Cambridge and can
receive credit for 14.04 and 14.32 (as well as economics
elective credit, HASS elective credit, and elective credit). Students
who have taken those courses will be able to take Part
II papers and will have a broader range of choices. They will also
receive credit for specific economics electives (as well as economics
elective credit, HASS elective credit, and general elective credit).
Economics students will take most or all of their papers in the
Economics Tripos, but it may be possible in some circumstances to take
one paper out of the four in a different field while at Cambridge.
Note that it is not possible to receive credit for 14.33 in Cambridge.
That course must be taken at MIT, and it is recommended that it be
taken no later than the fall of senior year.
